In addition, to our collection's "historical artifacts" mostly displayed at our office in the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center, we have a number of displays around town. We regularly create a display at the Redmond Library with the help of our community members, and we have a large window display at the new Washington State Liquor Store, which is located on Redmond Way in the historic building, Brown's Garage. This building and more are part of our Historic Walking Tour. Much of Redmond's history can be gleaned from the stories known about our town's oldest buildings, and Tom Hitzroth is a master at telling them. We also regularly show some of our large photo collection at Redmond's Saturday Market. Come visit us at our market booth, or at our office, Room 106, ORSCC.

McRedmond and Perrigo Arrive
The first settlers in the Redmond area were Luke McRedmond (1820?-1898) and Warren Perrigo (1836-?). Arriving in the area in 1871, McRedmond took up a claim along the Sammamish River, while Perrigo took up land just east of him.
In 1850, McRedmond left Ireland during the potato famine, and immigrated to the United States. He traveled across the country, and settled at Port Madison in Kitsap County. There, he took up service as county commissioner and sheriff. Perrigo, a Civil War veteran, and his wife Laura, had traveled around Cape Horn from New England in 1866 and, like McRedmond, also settled in Kitsap County.
Both men had wanted to homestead. After visiting areas east of Seattle, they decided to file claims in the Sammamish Valley where the soil was rich and the waters bountiful. Immediately after filing claims they started to clear their land.

Did you know that 16 properties within the City are designated as City Landmarks? The City Council established the Redmond Heritage Resource Register in the early 2000s as a way to highlight and protect these special places that represent Redmond’s past. Learn more about each of the 16 properties below. Learn more about the City’s Historic Preservation program on the City’s website.
The City also worked with King County Historic Preservation to offer increased benefits to owners of these historic properties. In order to do so, the King County Landmarks Commission in 2010 designated each of the properties as a City of Redmond Regional Landmark. Redmond incorporated as a city on December 31, 1912 when the birth of Ernest Alexander Adams brought the city’s population to 300, the number required by State law. The driving force behind incorporation was the ability to tax liquor sales – the funds of which were needed to finance a waterworks system.
“Redmond was founded by true pioneers, men and women who came up the Sammamish River to a beautiful, yet untamed wilderness. We have been pioneering ever since – first logging and farming, now microchips and bio-engineering, while in the future we look towards a diverse economy with businesses thriving in both the downtown and Overlake.”
Redmond Mayor John Marchione
